Sat, 14 November 2009 First Wave Radio #57 - Livin' Soul: A Fauxlbum
Livin' Soul is a band from France, whom as far as I know have released 3 albums. The Bridge, As A Spring and Sweet Lane. I always had this idea of making a sort of 'greatest hits' album of my favorite bands and artists, a collection of songs that are not only appealing but in an order that takes you on a musical journey, and since Livin' Soul originate in France, I decided to invent the word Fauxlbum, (well at the very least I give myself credit for inventing the word).
There's a lot of Bob Marley influence in their music, but yet they are very progressive and have a distinct sound with a very distinct vocalist. I find that their music slowly but surely grows on you. Give this fauxlbum a listen a couple of times and maybe you will agree. I am hoping to do more fauxlbums in the future so stay tuned.

This guest Podcast is brought to you by Mr. No Tears. It's a versus show: The Slackers Vs. The Aggrolites. Don't let the work day get you down, most of us work to live. Sat, 10 October 2009 First Wave Radio #55 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2
Just want to say a couple of things.
Saw Westbound Train and The Slackers last night. Great SHOW!!!
Nobel Peace Prize went to Obama. Was probably a political decision. Hope it's for the best.
As for this show it is self funded and self advised, no politics on this show. Just a soundtrack to your SKAndalous day.
People have been asking me about my recording techniques for the show, and all I can say is that I'm a little old Skool. I don't use any recording software, everything is put down live. If I screw up a mix I go back and redo the podcast from the beginning.
ALL HAIL SKA!!!

Here's a podcast, 3 Alborosie tracks against 3 Slackers' tunes, in no particular order. Threw in a couple of extra tunes to complete the mix. It's a back to school mix (not for me) for those that are going back, but those who are not, it's back to "the school of life" per usual. Hop on the bus and let's get outta here!!!

Tue, 4 August 2009 First Wave Radio #52 - Random Proverb
Does life feel like a maze? A Labyrinth of endless commuting. A narrower mind about the world. We seem to be more drawn to our comfort zone as we age. And yet we still seek something much larger.
So take a trip back to 2005 (for the most part), a mixed bag.

Sun, 19 April 2009 First Wave Radio #48 - Tubacular!!!
I just wanted to try something a little different. Of course Tuba's are the theme but most people don’t know that there are many breeds of tubas. The most common of which is called a sousaphone, popular amongst marching bands and New Orleans style brass bands. Named after an American composer and conductor John Philip Sousa, not only did he design this tuba, he wrote 3 novels and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. His father enlisted him to keep him from joining the circus. Well, his father was right about one thing...joining a circus is very very enticing!!!!

Sun, 30 November 2008 First Wave Radio #41 - Mixed Bag
This episode is a mixed bag. I've been listening to a lot of different tunes lately and this affects my mixes. Right now, I'm really digging Los Skarnales, sort of a rockabilly ska band, seem to have a lot of energy in there music but progressive as well. Patrice is another artist that I've been listening to, soulful singer popular in Europe. I recommend his album 'Nile', as it stands alone in it's uniqueness, a very good album front to back in my opinion and very well produced. This week has been a little crazy, so I threw this episode together in a matter of minutes. Stay tuned for episode #42 in two weeks time.

Sun, 24 August 2008 First Wave Radio #36b - Downbeat The Cleaner
A gig of mine fell through, and so I decided to do some cleaning around the house. But before breaking out the mop and yellow gloves, I needed some music to motivate me. Here's a true story, I had a very brief meeting with Prince Buster and needless to say we may have gotten off on the wrong foot. I had the priviledge of going backstage as I am friends with Willi Williams, who opened for Prince Buster and Lynn Taitt. And just before Prince Buster was to go on stage, I was standing just outside the dressing room area closest to the stage, and when he came out, I must of startled him because, he looked at me and jumped a little backwards, and he looked at me over his sunglasses as if I appeared out of thin air and he looked over his shades at me, and I swear to you, he gave me 'cut eye'. I didn't say anything and I kinda felt guilty, but hey he's a pro, the show was one of the best performances I've seen and I just feel fortunate to have seen him live, even if it meant that for 2 seconds he was slightly pissed at me. Don't forget to join my facebook group 'First Wave Radio Podcast' for more useless antics.

Sun, 27 July 2008 First Wave Radio #34 - I'm A YUPpie??
By definition I'm A YUP/yuppie. Young Urban Professional…my trumpet player disagrees with me as I live in a terrible neighbourhood, full of crack and other harsh and illegal substances. I work during the day and moonlight by night, well minus the moonlighting...which brings to question...is being a yuppie strictly about location and consumerism?? Am I a sucker for buying most of my music?? Nobody, will ever admit to their yuppie status...and I cringe to the idea that I'm that guy, with that girl, who dines there, and consumes these things.....but most of all I cringe to the idea that I'm that guy who's afraid; afraid to face the harsh realities of crack, crackheads, crime, my car breaking down, social status, public transportation, germs, dysfunctional families, death, pesticides, imitation iPods...(the list goes on).....the mere thought of what a YUPpie is....is....incredibly YUPpie....let's just be responsible consumers and live with and for all.....but in the meantime let Jimmy Cliff answer all of our questions.

Sun, 18 May 2008 First Wave Radio #29 - ProgresSka!!!
It was until music was first recorded, wrapped and passed around did we see such progress, in terms of the fusion of sounds and the collision of cultures. For example, in Jamaica, there was Mento, then there was Ska then onto Rocksteady…and then all of sudden there was fork in the road…in the UK bands such as The Specials inspired a new generation of bands. 2 Tone became a fixture in the UK while in the U.S. a new ska punk generation was a brewing with bands like Operation Ivy, inspired by the UK band The Clash. The Dead 60s recently broke up, but The Specials have recently reunited and will hopefully start touring again. Progress, evolution, call it what you will...this show is dedicated to the many paths SKA has taken.

Sun, 9 March 2008 First Wave Radio #24 - The Electric Light Show
Ska Cubano is a great band. Members are from around the world. Apparently, Cuban music before the revolution was deeply inspired by music from the caribbean, especially calypso in the 40's and 50s. Because of the revolution not much contact was made between Cuba and the rest of the islands...Ska Cubano asks the question 'what if ska was introduced and influenenced Cuban music... An "alternative history" as you will. I start off the show with an epic intro from Electric Light Orchestra, which is totallly unneccessary but...hmm...I guess I just wanted to spread my wings a little.

How about programs that enhance or maintain the culture and history of your country?? If only we could stop the tax man from misappropriating our money.

Sun, 3 February 2008 First Wave Radio #19 - The Garden Show
There's no reason to call this show the Garden Show, other than showcasing a band from Germany. A very good and contemporary band called Seeed. First heard them a couple of years back and worked with German Ska legend Dr. Ring Ding. I also wanted to feature somewhat of a forgotten legend, in the form of Dr. Alimantado. The album is called "Best Dressed Chicken in Town" and in my mind a very solid album with all the elements you expect from a reggae artist. Peace.

Sun, 20 January 2008 First Wave Radio #17-Bare Bones
Welcome to the Bare Bones Show...lots of vocals...little bass and drum...I'm a rhythm man but one must always respect the art of song writing...just to note 3 Canadian artists feartured here...yours truly playing bass on one of the tracks...a couple of songs written by Bob Marley the last of which was performed by Bob Marley, which tells you the strength of his song writing...even with a mediocre sound recording, his talent as a musician/performer/song writer really shines.

Sun, 6 January 2008 First Wave Radio #15 - The Life
Much respect to the late Montreal Native Oscar Peterson. I have never heard anyone play an instrument so fast with grace and style, groove and swing like Oscar Peterson did. His body of work is huge, and I have not even dented his discography but the one album that sticks out of my mind is West Side Story. This show (although recorded a week before his passing) is dedicated to him.

First Wave Radio #57 - Livin' Soul: A Fauxlbum

First Wave Radio #48 - Tubacular!!!

First Wave Radio #41 - Mixed Bag

First Wave Radio #36b - Downbeat The Cleaner
