First Wave Radio #88 - Bad Management = Bad Tenant I believe in top down thinking. On a micro scale if you rent in a building and your neighbours have little respect for you, it's really the building management to blame. I hate to think that we are sheep, but we react according to our environment. If someone doesn't respect the common areas like hallways and elevators, they probably don't respect the management, and hence has a negative effect on the rest of the tenants. Work places are the same. Governments running countries are the same. The top creates societal norms. Everything from opening doors for people behind you to corruption is a meme that is passed on quickly to all levels of people. So let's be true to our virutes and values and not be so impressionable. We all have the power to change the world for the better. First Wave Radio #83 - Sabbatical 1 Jazz There was a time long ago when I couldn't afford to buy my dad a gift for his birthday, and all I had were 2 turntables, 2 crates of his Jazz records and a CD recorder. I spent a few months sifting through all the records and made a spreadsheet of all the tracks; I took the ones I liked and more importantly made a Jazz Mix out of it for my dad. Don't mind the fact that out of those 2 crates I narrowed in on only a handful of artists, so enjoy. I am taking a musical Sabbatical for an episode. Jazz this month. First Wave Radio #79 - Make Dub Not War A lot of unrest in the world. One thing that seems to be a common issue right now is the cost of rising food prices. Rising oil prices maybe to blame. It is discouraging news for all. Apparently Mariah Carey was paid $1 million to perform 4 songs for one of Gadhafi's sons birthdays. After which from then on each brother would try to out due the other with lavash birthdays, while citizens of Libya struggled to make ends meet. When Moammar Gadhafi overthrew King Idris in a coup d'etat, he was a revolutionary that wanted to change and unite Libya, and free it from Monarchy. The rest is history and people change. First Wave Radio #69 - The Genre Hipster
I am not a hipster. Nor do I really know what that means. But let us take a journey. Where our net-worth is measured by the contents on our computers. The hours, days and weeks of continuous music. But don't judge ones computer. It holds the key to our moods and feelings, on those days, quite frankly, when we feel nothing at all. With digital paper trails growing and growing each day, we are becoming more sophisticated in our tastes. Sub-genre after sub-genre of things that make us feel. I heard that the album making process is changing. Bands may no longer release entire albums, but instead easy to access singles. Or maybe that's happening now. I don't know. Let's just listen to the podcast.

First Wave Radio #68 - World Cup Finals
Soccer/Football is life. The rest are just details. If only we could settle all of our disputes and foreign policies with a 90 minute game of soccer/football. But of course even this would have its flaws. Missed calls, bad decisions, corruption, drugs, politics. The parallels are endless. I give credit to the World Cup. Only the World Cup can bring so many people together, of all ages, races and financial backgrounds. If only we can harness this power to change governments and tackle real world issues.

Episode 67 – G1 and for alll What do I think about the G8 and G20 summit? Sure, I am not an expert on politics. But why are we spending $1billion dollars to protect people that are supposedly more important than us? Why do we have this elitist mentality? I have partly paid for this event with my tax dollars, so what is my voice worth? Apparently, nothing. Better yet, I am paying important people to talk amongst themselves. I want to know what the poorest person in the world has to say about this. What does he/she have to say about the world economy, the state of our environment? I still believe that paying taxes is a measure of altruism but who am I helping here? First Wave Radio #63b - Rage to Calm Have you ever paid a bill knowing that you are getting ripped off? A cell phone bill much higher than the advertised price after system access fees, voice mail and call display? A restocking fee for returning a crappy product? A moving fee for moving your services to a new address? Enormous shipping fees? Commissions? Well chances are at one point or another, you let it go, cause it wasn't worth your time, patience or it wasn't economically feasible to hire a lawyer (which is another issue all together). I recently had to fight with my car insurance company, because they deemed me 50% liable for an accident that was clearly 0% my fault. I eventually had to go thru many hoops to get my full deductible back, but it made me wonder...how many people just give up?? My deductible is ridiculously high cause I am cheap and AM A SAFE DRIVER!! but all put aside these corporations that we work for and invest in (we give these companies money for these services), are trying to rip us off. It is probably an unwritten corporate policy to do so. Maybe competition is so fierce that these companies need to rip us off, and take advantage of our complacency. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

First Wave Radio #62 - New Format? The following great selections were brought to you by Mr. No Tears. First Wave Radio is switching to m4a format files. I was hesitant to do this in the past as some mp3 players don't support this format, but that being said the advantage of having m4a files is that I can break each podcast into chapters, so that if you aren't digging a particular selection you can easily skip to the next track with a push of the forward (or backward) button. You will notice the difference in your ipod or 'personal music player' but may not notice anything on iTunes or software alike. First Wave Radio #61 - Bridges Here's a picture of a bridge. The end. A buddy of mine was talking about karma and consciousness the other day. He told me that we all have to be conscious of the fact that our world does not end at the skin, that we belong to a much larger universe, and that our actions and our successes very much influence success to those around us. If we strive to help ones around us to succeed, then we all succeed. Opposite is true of course but let's not focus on the negatives. Eat, sleep and be Irie.

First Wave Radio #59 - And From Outer Space...... To be objective, here's an interesting podcast. It's myself and Mr No Tears pushing dub into outer space. Dub for the anarchist, socialist and the surrealist. Our first album 'Say No To $' sold for $3 at a book fair in downtown Toronto about 10years ago. We were poor and we believed in the greater good of humanity. Our slogan was..."poor people deserve to listen to music too". Some things have changed but for the most part we still believe that a labour of love is not labour at all, it is a legacy in art, without a price tag. Without inhibitions. I started this podcast for the most part as an altruist. I feel that I have a civic duty to bring music to the people, free of commercials, corporate schemes and profiteering motives. It’s so disappointing to me when I subscribe to a podcast and then maybe a year later I can no longer download an episode without paying for it or listening to half an hour of commercials. Life is short, commercials and advertising is taking too much time from our lives, speaking of which my rambling is also taking too much of my time…… So anyways, if you like this podcast send me a cheque for $500.....hahaha..."if you afraid of dying, then you ain't living right"-Talib Kweli-

First Wave Radio #57 - Livin' Soul: A Fauxlbum Livin' Soul is a band from France, whom as far as I know have released 3 albums. The Bridge, As A Spring and Sweet Lane. I always had this idea of making a sort of 'greatest hits' album of my favorite bands and artists, a collection of songs that are not only appealing but in an order that takes you on a musical journey, and since Livin' Soul originate in France, I decided to invent the word Fauxlbum, (well at the very least I give myself credit for inventing the word). There's a lot of Bob Marley influence in their music, but yet they are very progressive and have a distinct sound with a very distinct vocalist. I find that their music slowly but surely grows on you. Give this fauxlbum a listen a couple of times and maybe you will agree. I am hoping to do more fauxlbums in the future so stay tuned.

First Wave Radio #55 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2
Just want to say a couple of things. Saw Westbound Train and The Slackers last night. Great SHOW!!! Nobel Peace Prize went to Obama. Was probably a political decision. Hope it's for the best. As for this show it is self funded and self advised, no politics on this show. Just a soundtrack to your SKAndalous day. People have been asking me about my recording techniques for the show, and all I can say is that I'm a little old Skool. I don't use any recording software, everything is put down live. If I screw up a mix I go back and redo the podcast from the beginning. ALL HAIL SKA!!!

First Wave Radio #48 - Tubacular!!! I just wanted to try something a little different. Of course Tuba's are the theme but most people don’t know that there are many breeds of tubas. The most common of which is called a sousaphone, popular amongst marching bands and New Orleans style brass bands. Named after an American composer and conductor John Philip Sousa, not only did he design this tuba, he wrote 3 novels and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. His father enlisted him to keep him from joining the circus. Well, his father was right about one thing...joining a circus is very very enticing!!!!

Again I can't say enough about Los Skarnales, high energy and fun but at the same time a very progressive band, although I know some of you would disagree. I can never play one Los Skarnales song without playing another. So another year is done have a safe and happy new year and remember rich or poor, old or young, ska and reggae is for everyone. First Wave Radio #41 - Mixed Bag This episode is a mixed bag. I've been listening to a lot of different tunes lately and this affects my mixes. Right now, I'm really digging Los Skarnales, sort of a rockabilly ska band, seem to have a lot of energy in there music but progressive as well. Patrice is another artist that I've been listening to, soulful singer popular in Europe. I recommend his album 'Nile', as it stands alone in it's uniqueness, a very good album front to back in my opinion and very well produced. This week has been a little crazy, so I threw this episode together in a matter of minutes. Stay tuned for episode #42 in two weeks time.

First Wave Radio #36b - Downbeat The Cleaner A gig of mine fell through, and so I decided to do some cleaning around the house. But before breaking out the mop and yellow gloves, I needed some music to motivate me. Here's a true story, I had a very brief meeting with Prince Buster and needless to say we may have gotten off on the wrong foot. I had the priviledge of going backstage as I am friends with Willi Williams, who opened for Prince Buster and Lynn Taitt. And just before Prince Buster was to go on stage, I was standing just outside the dressing room area closest to the stage, and when he came out, I must of startled him because, he looked at me and jumped a little backwards, and he looked at me over his sunglasses as if I appeared out of thin air and he looked over his shades at me, and I swear to you, he gave me 'cut eye'. I didn't say anything and I kinda felt guilty, but hey he's a pro, the show was one of the best performances I've seen and I just feel fortunate to have seen him live, even if it meant that for 2 seconds he was slightly pissed at me.

First Wave Radio #34 - I'm A YUPpie??
Young Urban Professional…my trumpet player disagrees with me as I live in a terrible neighbourhood, full of crack and other harsh and illegal substances. I work during the day and moonlight by night, well minus the moonlighting...which brings to question...is being a yuppie strictly about location and consumerism?? Am I a sucker for buying most of my music?? Nobody, will ever admit to their yuppie status...and I cringe to the idea that I'm that guy, with that girl, who dines there, and consumes these things..... but most of all I cringe to the idea that I'm that guy who's afraid; afraid to face the harsh realities of crack, crackheads, crime, my car breaking down, social status, public transportation, germs, dysfunctional families, death, pesticides, imitation iPods...(the list goes on).....the mere thought of what a YUPpie is....is....incredibly YUPpie.... let's just be responsible consumers and live with and for all.....but in the meantime let Jimmy Cliff answer all of our questions.

First Wave Radio #30 - Expos and Clementones
2 of my favorite Toronto area bands are The Expos and The Clementones. Had a chance to see The Expos on a couple of occasions, and must say they are a great band, and I'm totally impressed how the drummer can hold down a steady stepper beat and sing leads at the same time, some of us aint that coordinated. I have yet to see The Clementones live but they'll be playing at The Reverb in Toronto June21!! So here's a quick 1 for 1 from these 2 bands.

First Wave Radio #29 - ProgresSka!!! It was until music was first recorded, wrapped and passed around did we see such progress, in terms of the fusion of sounds and the collision of cultures. For example, in Jamaica, there was Mento, then there was Ska then onto Rocksteady…and then all of sudden there was fork in the road…in the UK bands such as The Specials inspired a new generation of bands. 2 Tone became a fixture in the UK while in the U.S. a new ska punk generation was a brewing with bands like Operation Ivy, inspired by the UK band The Clash. The Dead 60s recently broke up, but The Specials have recently reunited and will hopefully start touring again. Progress, evolution, call it what you will...this show is dedicated to the many paths SKA has taken.

First Wave Radio #24 - The Electric Light Show Ska Cubano is a great band. Members are from around the world. Apparently, Cuban music before the revolution was deeply inspired by music from the caribbean, especially calypso in the 40's and 50s. Because of the revolution not much contact was made between Cuba and the rest of the islands...Ska Cubano asks the question 'what if ska was introduced and influenenced Cuban music... An "alternative history" as you will. I start off the show with an epic intro from Electric Light Orchestra, which is totallly unneccessary but...hmm...I guess I just wanted to spread my wings a little.

First Wave Radio #22b - The Tax Show This show is dedicated to the Tax Man. We all pay taxes in some form or another. It's discouraging sometimes but I think of taxes as a measurement of your altruistic ways. How much do you support your government?? How much do you care about the roads, air, water and the poor?? For those of us that have universal Health Care, how much do you care about the health of others, citizens, permanent residents and refugees??? How about programs that enhance or maintain the culture and history of your country?? If only we could stop the tax man from misappropriating our money.

First Wave Radio - Episode #6 The Cooking Show. I've been enjoying cooking food for the last couple of months, but, no man enjoys the joy of cooking and EATING as much as the man known as John Douglas Broadfoot Wilkins.
